I am completely not a political person. I do not align with one party over another. I simply look for the most impartial information about a candidate and I go from there. So I can assure you that I will not be making a habit out of sharing political information nor will I ever tell anyone how they should vote. I tend to shy away from debates on the subject too as I’m honestly not well read on politics. How one votes has always been a private matter to me and I see no point in getting into debates over it.
That being said, I have been waiting to hear what Romney had to say about his comments which put down the lower class and those who need government aide. I’m not going to lie here, I am low income. I do receive government benefits so these statements were very much made about the many American families just like my own. But I wanted to give Romney a fair shake and I think these words say it all:
My campaign is about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again, particularly those who don’t have work, Romney said. His whole campaign is based on getting people jobs again, putting people back to work. This is ultimately a question about direction for the country. Do you believe in a government-centered society that provides more and more benefits or do you believe instead in a free enterprise society where people are able to pursue their dreams?
Isn’t that what we all want? For those less fortunate to be able to stand on their own two feet. I am an American who needs government assistance, but who does not want to need it. I think you will find that to be the case of most low income families.
If there is a way to change that, then I’m all for it. I know people who have been unemployed for the past 4 years of Obama being president. They just keep on renewing their unemployment benefits. Little is asked of them to prove what work they have been looking for. And honestly, I know they want to work, but there’s little point in taking a job that’s just going to land them right back on unemployment when the contract ends. So if you can get extension after extension on your unemployment, why wouldn’t you?
I don’t want hand outs and I think based on the above statement for Mitt Romney he understands that about the American people. The government is not going to get out of the hole it is in if it continues to have to give more and more government benefits to people. That is not the answer to fixing the economy.
And continuing to allow people to remain unemployed or underemployed is definitely not the answer either. Not using all of your skills begins to weigh on a person. Poverty is not going to be completely obliterated ever, but lets not judge an off the cuff remark which really we only saw bits and pieces of. One which was secretly taped at that. Lets listen to the actual context of what Romney is saying.
The way I look at it is when our kids grow up and they are bleeding us dry we have to show them a little tough love and kick them out on their own. Of course we still love them and care about what happens, but sometimes we have to hit rock bottom to get out of it. Maybe Romney understands this better than his opponent does. America was founded by hard working people, so maybe it’s time we get back to our roots and not coddle people so much. And again, I say this as a person who is receiving government assistance.
I don’t think this is a case for making the rich richer and the poor poorer, I think this is a case of lets give these people the skills they need to stand on their own two feet and stop hand holding. That’s what I take out of the above statement anyways. What do you make of it?
