It’s October now. Less than a month until Halloween and we cannot wait around here. You see we completely missed out on Halloween last year. Thanks to a freak October snow storm which left us without power for 3 1/2 days, but many more without power for a week or more.
It was a very stressful and trying time. The kids were out of school for a week. Without power in much of the city we live in though Halloween was canceled. How could we know what houses would have candy?
So our Halloween night last year was spent in our neighbor’s kitchen (where it was warm because her gas stove was not an electric start like ours) playing whatever board games we could find by candle light.
I will say this, we do have some great memories from that very stressful time, but we sadly did miss out. Especially considering that was supposed to be my youngest daughter’s first Halloween. It was disappointing, but it did not break us.
And this year as Halloween rolls around we are all getting very excited about the prospect of Halloween. Picking out costumes and decorating and even thinking about how we want to carve our pumpkins this year. We missed out on all of that so we need to do it bigger and better this year.
We have already picked up costumes for the two little ones. We would have gotten the two older ones too, but they weren’t with us when we shopped for the little ones. We have Stitch and a Ladybug so far. My oldest wants to be Katniss from The Hunger Games. And my middle daughter hasn’t really expressed an interest in what she wants to be just yet.
We hope to be able to find them their costumes soon. We also hope that this year we’ll get to use them. What are the chances of another freak October snow storm right before Halloween that knocks out the power for almost an entire state for upwards of a week? That has got to be slim to none, right?
As soon as October 1st hit my son kept asking about putting up the Halloween decorations. My husband didn’t have an opportunity to do it until yesterday and we’re all so thrilled with it. We even added a few new things to the design. Including a scarecrow and some spider webbing. It looks great. Next we are getting started on our down stairs neighbor’s porch. She’s a Halloween fanatic so we want to show our Halloween spirit in the whole house.
Now we just need to add some well picked pumpkins to the mix. Which of course means a fun trip to the farm filled with a hay ride and the search for a perfect pumpkin. I think a little apple cider will be on tap too. Even though this week the weather has been a little warmer than usual for this time of year I am enjoying all of the excitement surrounding this Halloween.
Have you started preparing for Halloween?
